Personality Disorders in ICD-10 – 3 Groups

Three categories of Personality Disorders in ICD-10

As per ICD-10 standards, Personality disorders are defined as consistent patterns of behavior that significantly varies from cultural norms, is impractical and inflexible. Such behaviors are not limited to specific conditions. This aberrant behavior and change in though patterns created personal suffering and also substantial impact on surrounding people including friends and family members. The symptoms of such personality disorders which are diagnosed during state of adolescence remain stable. Such symptoms do not occur due to presence of organic disease or as side effects of any other disorder. The lists of personality disorders as per ICD-10 are as below,

  • Paranoid personality disorder
    This disorder is characterized by frequent mistrust and attitude to consider actions of other people as hostile and dangerous to their own safety.
  • Schizoid personality disorder
    The patients who have SPD will try to remain alone and will not be interested in establishing social relationship with others. Their emotions are limited though they are intellectually strong and have great career. They are not interested towards sex or personal relationships and are usually egocentric in character.
  • Schizotypal personality disorder:
    This disorder is qualified by paranoid and strange ideas, magical thinking and ideas of reference.
  • Antisocial personality disorder:
    It is a personality disorder where the emotions of the patient are limited, they lack empathy towards others and do not understand others difficulties, selfish and arrogant, do not learn from past mistakes and punishments, frequently exhibit derelict behavior.
  • Histrionic personality disorder:
    The patients often strive to get attention from others. They show exaggerated emotional expressions and theatrical behavior.
  • Borderline personality disorder:
    A blatant emotive instability. The relationships are intense but unstable and often resulting in conflict.
  • Dependent personality disorder:
    The patients having this disorder consider that they can not lead their life independently without the help of others. They are always dependent on other emotionally.
  • Avoidant personality disorder:
    The patients having this disorder consider themselves as inferior and fear that they are rejected by other individuals. So, they do not involve in social relationships.
  • Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder:
    The patients having disorder are preoccupied with perfectionism and preoccupation, hence tasks could not be completed so fast.

Not all personality disorders mentioned above are listed in ICD-10 and classifications could vary from psychotherapeutic schools. Certain disorders are limited to US and such disorders can not be diagnosed in European countries. Also, some practices which have existed for forty years and considered as nuisance still and are not seen as trouble specific yet. Many of the Personality disorder are diagnosed outside of Europe at present including passive-aggressive personality disorder, sadistic personality disorder, masochistic personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder.

The below personality disorders are not diagnosed currently due to changes that have took place in modern society. You can find the diagnosis techniques for such disorders in older psychiatric texts. Some of those disorders are querulous personality disorder, sexually unrestrained personality disorders, infantile personality disorder, and Will Lost personality disorder.

The list of personality disorders registered in ICD-10 can be classified into three groups,

Category A: In this category of personality disorders, the behavior is often strange. It includes schizoid personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder and schizotypal personality disorder.

Category B: The personality disorders in this category depict lot of emotions and are emotionally unstable. Some of the disorders under this category are antisocial personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Category C: There are plenty of personality disorders in this category and typical characteristics are excessive anxiety, insecurity and lack of self-belief. Some of the examples are compulsive personality disorder and dependant personality disorder.
