What is depression?
Depression is a very common mental disorder and sixteen to twenty percent of individual suffer due to depression in their life period. They are permanently joyless and remain depressed. They tend to lose interest in activities which they usually like and enjoy and they find it hard to perform they day to day work like a normal person.
The significant symptoms of depression include loss of interest, apathy, lack of motivation, indifference and negative emotions. Other symptoms of depression include anxiety, insomnia, difficulty to concentrate, self-doubt and lack of self-confidence. There are various psychological and biological factors which lead people to an increased vulnerability causing depressive disorder. Burdens such as increased responsibility and stress in workplace, loss or death of loved ones are common reasons for depression especially when the patient is of vulnerable type.
Depression can be diagnosed only if particular conditions are met properly. There should at least 4 typical symptoms which indicate depression, out of which at least 2 should belong to category of core symptoms such as lack of motivation or pleasure, loss of interest, apathy etc and should exist for at least 2 weeks.
Depression can be treated through proper medication and psychotherapy. The normal treatment methods include combination of both psychotherapy and medication. Antidepressants are used for drug treatment of patients suffering from depression. Psychotherapeutic treatment involves converting the negative thought patterns of the patient to positive feelings.

Once the symptoms have lessened, parties must continue to take antidepressants in order to avoid relapse and this is called maintenance therapy. Apart from parties must be taught techniques using psychotherapy to assist them in fighting against the early repeated symptoms of depressive episodes.

They are filled with self-doubt and lack self-confidence and they find it difficult to do daily tasks like a normal person. They start losing interest in things which they used to like a lot earlier. Also, encouragement and distraction does not give any relief for depressed people.
